The best thing about a family holiday is when the children aren't bored — and the area around Chata nad Valchou has plenty to surprise them with. Right in Zázrivá you'll find petting sheep farms, horses and a climbing wall, and within an hour's drive a whole world of fun opens up: rope parks, an aquapark, ziplines, castles and open-air museums.

Right in Zázrivá

You don't have to go far. Some of the sweetest experiences for children await right in the village — among the animals, on horseback or on the climbing wall.

A short drive away — Terchová and Vrátna

Towards Terchová, just a few minutes' drive, several attractions are tucked away that will keep the whole family entertained for half a day or a full one.

  • Dino Adventure rope park — rope courses for children and adults and life-size dinosaurs (Terchová, ~12 km / 15 min). Open May–October.
  • Vrátna – Malá Fatra — an 8-seat gondola up to Snilovské sedlo; in summer a bike park, mountain trikes and a giant trampoline (~16 km / 20 min).
  • Juraj Jánošík Exhibition — the story of the famous outlaw and the village's history, right in the municipal office building in Terchová.

Dolný Kubín and Orava

Towards Dolný Kubín and Orava, water, adrenaline and a slice of history await you.

  • Aqua relax Dolný Kubín — a children's pool, climbing wall, rope park and pedal karts; the water is ozonated, suitable even for allergy sufferers (~17 km / 22 min).
  • Rafting the Orava — an easy river float for families with children and beginners — you rent the gear on site (Dolný Kubín).
  • Summer on Kubínska hoľa — chairlifts, a long zipline (1,234 m), mountain trikes, scooters and boating on the lake with a view of the Tatras (~22 km / 26 min).
  • Orava Castle — an "eagle's nest" on a rock above the Orava river, with 154 rooms and popular night-time tours with theatre (Oravský Podzámok, ~28 km / 30 min).

For history and fairytales

If you fancy a full-day trip, it's worth going a little further — for narrow-gauge railways, open-air museums and fairytale characters.

  • Funny Park — adrenaline and sports obstacles, plus climbing among the trees (Oravská Lesná, ~32 km / 40 min).
  • Orava Forest Railway — one of the few preserved switchback narrow-gauge railways in the world; the ride on the Tanečník–Sedlo Beskyd section takes about an hour.
  • Vychylovka Open-Air Museum — the Museum of the Kysuce Village with more than 50 buildings of folk architecture and a historic forest railway (Nová Bystrica, ~35 km / 43 min).
  • Museum of the Orava Village — an open-air museum below the Roháče peaks that shows life in the Orava hamlets a hundred years ago (Zuberec, ~59 km / 1 h).
  • Fairytale Forest — a kilometre-long trail with fairytale characters and live animals below Strečno Castle (~55 km / 45 min).
  • Rafts on the Váh — a raft trip along a 7 km stretch of the Váh, with a picnic and music (Strečno).

A few tips to finish

  • Check the opening hours. — Most attractions run seasonally (roughly May–October) — take a look at the current opening times before you set off.
  • Plan around the weather. — In the rain the aquapark, museums and open-air museums are a treat; in fine weather, rope parks, castles and ziplines.
  • Everything is a short drive away. — From the cottage most attractions are within 30–45 minutes — you can comfortably fit in more than one in a day.
