Chata nad Valchou is an ideal base for winter lovers. There's something for everyone nearby — skiers have resorts for beginners and experts within reach, you can sled right on the hills in front of the cottage, and ski tourers have the whole Malá Fatra at their fingertips. To make it easy to find your way, we've split the tips into three parts: skiing, sledding and ski touring.
Ski resorts within reach
Although the cottage doesn't stand right on a slope, within an hour's drive you'll find resorts for complete beginners, families with children and demanding skiers. We list the resorts from nearest to farthest, with approximate distance and drive time from the cottage. Before you travel we recommend checking the resorts' websites — you'll find the current snow conditions, lift operations and webcams there.
Right by the cottage — a few minutes' drive
The nearest resorts are small and family-friendly — ideal for a quick ski, children's first turns or a relaxed afternoon without long queues.
- Ski Centrum Kozinec (9.6 km · 13 min) — a small resort above Zázrivá (650–995 m), 5 km of slopes from blue to black, 2 lifts, a snowpark and a children's lift with a ski school. Mostly natural snow; the black run is among the steepest in Slovakia.
- Ski Gavurky (12.3 km · 16 min) — a sunny resort in Terchová, friendly to children and families. A shorter slope with snowmaking and daily grooming, 2 lifts, a sledding run and a ski school.
Larger resorts within reach
A little farther, larger areas await with cable cars, long slopes and facilities for a full day.
- Vrátna — Malá Fatra (16.7 km · 20 min) — the largest resort in the area: 12.5 km of slopes, a gondola and 10 lifts. Paseky is a paradise for families, while Chleb draws the most demanding — you'll find Slovakia's steepest slope here as well as a 2 km black run.
- Kubínska hoľa (22.5 km · 26 min) — 13 km of daily-groomed slopes, a gondola, a snowpark, a freeride zone and 10 km of cross-country trails. Panoramic views of the Tatras and a large free car park.
For a bigger ski day
If you want to extend your day on the slopes or try something new, it's worth going a little farther to the Liptov and Turiec regions.
- Malinô Brdo — Skipark Ružomberok (36.3 km · 40 min) — 12 km of wide, long slopes above Ružomberok, an 8-seat gondola, a snowpark, ski-touring routes and accommodation right on the slope. The multi-day skipass is also valid at Donovaly.
- Winter Park Martinky (54 km · 60 min) — a historic resort on the Martinské hole meadows (above 1,150 m) with plenty of natural snow and a long season. 13.3 km of slopes, a freestyle arena, a hotel and après-ski.
- Closest for families. Kozinec and Gavurky are the nearest and most child-friendly; both Vrátna and Kubínska have children's zones and ski schools.
- Watch the conditions. Before you travel, check the webcams and snow conditions on the resorts' websites — the higher-altitude Martinky and Kubínska hoľa hold snow the longest.
- Gear and skipass. Rentals and servicing are available at the resorts; on your return you stow your skis in the lockable storage by the cottage.
Sledding right outside the cottage
For proper fun you don't have to go anywhere at all. Right in front of the cottage there are hills of varying difficulty — from gentle slopes for the youngest to steeper runs for the braver — just take your pick. We have sledges, toboggans and snow saucers available at the cottage, so you just need to put on warm clothes and head out the door.
Ski touring in the Malá Fatra
If you're drawn to the quiet of the winter meadows and climbing under your own power, the Malá Fatra is made for ski tourers. Straight from around the cottage you can set off on tours of varying difficulty — to the ridges around Veľký Rozsutec, the saddles above the Vrátna valley or the open meadows with views of the Tatras. The reward for the climb is untouched slopes and descents through virgin snow away from the groomed pistes.
Ski touring is a backcountry mountain activity — so before you head out always check the avalanche situation and the forecast, choose a route to match your experience and don't forget your avalanche gear. For beginners we recommend going out with an experienced friend or a mountain guide.
Whether you choose skiing, sledding or ski touring, after a day in the snow you return to the warmth of our cottage — with a fireplace, ski storage and a view of the snow-covered Rozsutec. You couldn't imagine a better end to a winter's day.
